Sober Curious? A Guide to Drinks With Character

Posted by The Purus Team on

Something has shifted in the way Australians drink. Bottle shops now carry serious zero-alcohol shelves, venues list alcohol-free options that are not just soda water with lime, and turning down a beer no longer requires an explanation. The sober curious movement is not about pledges or labels. It is about treating the default drink as a choice rather than an obligation.

What sober curious actually means

Being sober curious does not necessarily mean never drinking. For most people it means drinking deliberately: skipping the reflexive after-work glass, taking a month off, or simply wanting a Tuesday dinner that does not end in a bottle. The common thread is choosing rather than defaulting, and keeping your Sunday morning intact more often than not.

What the movement exposed is a gap. If you take alcohol off the table, most of what is left was designed for children or for hydration. Adults were left choosing between sugary soft drink, juice and water, none of which feel like a drink you would linger over.

What makes a grown-up glass

The best alcohol-free options borrow the qualities that made adult drinks adult in the first place. Aroma that arrives before the sip. A dry rather than sweet finish. Some complexity, a little bitterness or botanical depth to hold your interest past the second mouthful. And the ritual around it: a proper glass, ice, a garnish, a reason to pour slowly.

Aroma is where terpenes earn their place in this conversation. As the natural aromatic compounds of citrus peel, pine, lavender and pepper, they give a drink the layered, botanical nose that alcohol-free options so often lack. Complexity, it turns out, never needed the alcohol.

Where Purus fits

Our sparkling drinks were built for exactly this shelf. Focus Guava pours bright and tropical with a clean dry finish; Calm Apple is crisp orchard fruit over a citrus and forest terpene blend. Both are zero sugar, caffeine free and preservative free in 250ml cans, which makes them as at home at a dinner table at nine as at a desk at nine.

They also behave well in company. Over ice with a garnish they hold their own next to a wine glass, and nobody at the table feels like they are holding a compromise.

Stocking the alcohol-free shelf

If you are building a proper zero-proof shelf at home, start with variety: something bright, something crisp, something sparkling. The Drinks Complete Bundle covers the Purus side of that in one box with both flavours included, and if you would rather try before you stock up, our stockists page lists where to find us in the wild.

The point of sober curiosity was never deprivation. It is that the drink in your hand should be there because you wanted it. Make it a good one.
